Tuxedo Shirts

What are some different fabric choices in Tuxedo Shirts?

Poly/Cotton Tuxedo Shirts
Poly/cotton is the most popular fabric for tuxedo shirts made today.  It is not very expensive to produce these shirts so they tend to be the most economical option for purchase.   Other than price, the main benefit of a poly-cotton tuxedo shirt is the fact that they don’t wrinkle.  Many customers prefer these shirts for this reason.  If you decide to buy a tuxedo shirt, this may be an option to consider.

100% Cotton Tuxedo Shirts
The best tuxedo shirts manufactured today are made from 100% cotton.  Cotton is a natural fiber that breathes well and therefore offers great comfort.  Better tuxedo shirts today are only made from 100% cotton.

However, keep in mind that your nicely pressed cotton tuxedo shirt will not look the same towards the end of your evening.  100% cotton tuxedo shirts tend to wrinkle quite a bit.  So if you choose to buy, you may want to consider this.   The poly cotton shirt, though not as comfortable, will not wrinkle when worn.

Pique Tuxedo Shirts
A pique tuxedo shirt  has a specific weave to the fabric.  The weave  has a texture to it, and has well as a “waffle like” pattern.  These pique shirts are considered the most formal, and usually worn to white tie events.  You will find pique tuxedo shirts in both cotton blends, and 100% cotton.  Obviously the better shirts are made from 100% cotton.  Joseph Abboud tuxedo shirts are made from these pique fabrics.

What are the different collar styles for Tuxedo Shirts?

Wing Tip Tuxedo Shirts
This is the classic pointed collar that has been a staple in men’s formal wear for years.  The style is very classic, and is usually worn with a formal bowtie.  You will find wing tip shirts available in pleated and non-pleated styles.
Laydown Tuxedo Shirts

The collar on a laydown tuxedo shirt is the same as you while find on a normal men’s dress shirt.  . The laydown style of tuxedo shirt has become quite popular these days.  This is mainly due to the fact that more and more men are choosing to wear a formal neck tie with their tuxedos instead of a bowtie.  Most men prefer to wear a laydown style shirt with a formal necktie/

Mandarin Tuxedo Shirts
Mandarin style tuxedo shirts are considered very fashion forward.  These shirts are not for everyone, and certainly not classic in any way.  Mandarin tuxedo shirts are also not worn with a tie, the are worn with what we call a “button cover”.  The button cover matches the pattern of the cufflinks and studs that are worn with the shirt.

Cuffs

Pleats make your tuxedo shirt a bit more formal than those with a plain front. The size of the pleats however is largely a matter of style. Half-inch pleats are most common but three-quarter inch pleats are a bold, sophisticated choice especially for big and tall guys.

Plain and Pleat Front

French Cuff
This is a wide cuff that is folded back and fastened with a cufflink instead of buttons. French cuffs are considered to be more formal than button cuffs so when you want to look super-sophisticated, this is the style for you.
By the way, lot of the so-called "French cuffs" on rental shirts are actually more like regular cuffs folded back on themselves and they don't look nearly as dapper as "real" French cuffs. Our French cuff shirts are the real deal.
If you choose a shirt with French cuffs, be sure to check out our cufflinks section with gold, silver and engraved styles.

Button Cuff
This is the "regular" cuff you probably have on most of your dress shirts. Sure, it's not as formal as a French cuff but it's still acceptable for any formal occasion so if you don't want to fiddle with cufflinks don't worry, you're going to look great in your button cuffs

Big and Tall

Speaking of big and tall, we offer a couple of shirts made specifically for big guys which are larger through the midsection, chest and arms, and tall guys which are are three to four inches longer than standard shirts so they stay tucked.

Many of our other tuxedo shirts, while not cut specifically for big and tall, do come in extended sizes with necks up to 18.5" and sleeve lengths to 37".

Something Different

If, after you've decided on a fabric, a collar and a cuff style you still want something to subtly distinguish you from the rest, consider a herringbone tuxedo shirt with a finely textured pattern, or one with a bold black stripe.
