Where there's a wedding, there'll almost assuredly be white wedding shirts aplenty. These popular formalwear pieces hold such a predominant place in men's wedding fashion sphere that it's rare to see a gentleman stray far from them when dressing to be wed.
In addition to versatility, tradition and standard have also influenced the regularity with which we see these shirts at weddings and other formal affairs. For some gentlemen, this has cast these shirts in a negatively neutral light, largely based on the argument that universality is an impediment to individuality. While this argument is easy enough to understand, it can be argued just as easily. You see, there's also a fair amount of variety among white wedding shirts today, and there's little reason why someone can't take the white dress shirt and make it their own.
What are some of the more obvious variations between the white dress shirts that men wear to weddings?
Pleated and Unpleated Fronts
We'll start with the most overt difference, which relates to the pleating that might or might not exist across the front of the shirt. Pleating can add an aesthetic of elegance through its addition of depth and texturizing, while a smooth front will provide a simpler layer of sophistication. Pleats can come in a variety of thicknesses, offering slightly more choice as gentlemen can opt for either thin or wide pleats to help him achieve the formal look he desires to present on the day of his wedding, one of the most important days of his life.
Laydown, Wing, and Mandarin Collars
A man's level of formality can be further customized through his selection of wedding shirt collar. Short wing collars are, traditionally speaking, considered the most formal. Laydown collars are somewhat more standard, and mandarin collars tend toward building a more modern look than the other formal shirts. One thing to note about the choice between collar styles is that each one plays off of accessories — neck ties, bow ties, etc. — in different ways, making a fellow's decision a little more complicated than he might expect.
That said, all of the above also makes it easier for him to dress for his wedding with an air of much-valued uniqueness and individuality that will make his formalwear ensemble memorable in its own right, both connected to and separate of the momentous occasion to which it's being worn. |
